Today is Mardi Gras! When I think of Mardi Gras, I think of New Orleans. And when I think of New Orleans, I think of The Princess and the Frog. The beautiful city of New Orleans is the backdrop to the story of Tiana, a determined waitress whose life changes after she kisses a frog.
A while back, we had a Princess and the Frog movie night. Here are some ideas that you can use to bring a little of the Big Easy to your home.
Decor:
This night took place during the summer. We chose to have our meal outside. To set the mood, we strung up white Christmas lights to the patio umbrella. Then to make us feel like we were at Mama Odie’s, we used colorful plastic cup to hang from the light. I wish I had a picture, but it looked really beautiful when the sun went down.
Inside, we set up a table with Mardi Gras beads.
Food:
Our menu consisted of Prince Naveen is Now a Frog Apples…
… Mama Odie’s Chicken Jambalaya…
… The Shadow Man’s Voodoo Punch (grape juice with floating grapes)…
…and Frog Cupcakes for dessert. You can find the recipe for these in the Disney Princess Cupcakes and More Cookbook.
Activity:
For an activity we made Rays or Lightning Bugs. Take an empty soda bottle. Tie pipe cleaners around the bottle to make legs.
Tape a construction paper body and wings to the bottle. Glue two beads to the bottle cap to make eyes. Before you seal the bottle, crack a glow stick and put it inside.

On the apples, they are grapes with a tiny hole cut into them, then chocolate chips inserted. On the cupcakes, they are green candy melts covered with white frosting and topped with a chocolate chip.
