If you asked me to suggest a romantic getaway and I said “Disney World,” you’d probably think I didn’t understand the question. Disney World is an amusement park with rides and characters. It’s a place for families with kids, not for couples. Right?
Many people would think that. But I’ve been going to Disney World my whole life, and I can tell you without hesitation that Disney World is the most romantic place on Earth.
Don’t believe me? Allow me to explain.
Romance is more than just the superficial acts of giving someone flowers, or taking them out for a candlelight dinner with a view of the Eiffel Tower. Romance is about your connection and shared experiences.
And it turns out that Disney excels at creating shared experiences and opportunities to connect.
Why Disney is Romantic: It’s About Your Story, Not the Setting
Imagine that restaurant in Paris with its view of the Eiffel Tower, flickering candlelight, and soft music playing in the background… now imagine you are there with your brother or sister, an old friend, or anyone you don’t have romantic feelings for.
That setting just went from romantic to platonic in a heartbeat.
So, romance isn’t about the aesthetic of your surroundings. Romance is about shared experience, emotional connection, and being fully present with your partner.
And this can happen anywhere.
When I think about my most romantic memories, they aren’t all from places with the most “romantic” reputation. They’re from moments when what mattered most was my relationship.
I’m willing to bet I’m not alone. Sure, some of these moments might have happened on a beach at sunset, like something out of a movie. But, more often, they happened on a random Tuesday, in a parking lot, laughing until you cried over something ridiculous.
However, some locations provide better conditions for romance to happen than others.
Traditional romantic destinations are typically about beauty and being alone together. That beauty is at times natural and expansive, but at other times it is a man-made elegance. And that intimate feeling of being alone can be an actuality, but often it is more of an illusion. Despite the feeling of being alone, you are just one of many couples at that location doing the exact same thing.
We’ve all been sold this idea of what romance should look like. But that’s all superficial compared to what romance actually is.
Which brings me back to Disney. Disney World is different in that it focuses not just on providing a place for people to share experiences, but also making those experiences stronger by removing distractions and providing emotional stimulation.
Disney World Provides Perfect Conditions for Romance
So what does Disney actually offer that creates these conditions for romance?
The Escape
You’ve probably heard people talk about the “Disney Bubble.” This is the term for that feeling of being removed from the stresses of the outside world and being completely immersed in the “magic” of Disney. Disney World does this better than any other place on the planet.
At home, even on a “date night,” part of your brain is thinking about the dishes in the sink, the work deadline on Monday, the errand you need to run tomorrow. At Disney World, those concerns evaporate.
It’s just you and the person you’re with, in the moment.
Permission to Be Playful
Disney also grants you permission to lighten up and embrace your playful side. There’s something about being in an environment that celebrates joy, whimsy, and wonder that makes it socially acceptable to express affection openly and be silly together.
You can hold hands without it feeling forced, take goofy photos without feeling self-conscious, get genuinely excited about something without worrying about seeming childish, and you can hug your partner spontaneously because you’re both having such a good time.
Emotional Magnifying Effect
I grew up visiting Disney World almost yearly with my family. When I met Lisa, I brought her for her first visit. And through our 30-plus years together, I’ve learned that visiting Disney World is a different experience when we go as a couple compared to when I was a kid, or as a parent, or with friends.
Disney World is intentionally designed to make you feel things. It’s impossible not to get emotional while you’re there. And by emotional, I don’t necessarily mean weepy. Though Lisa and I are both guilty of getting teary-eyed.
Imagineers put thought into every detail: the music, the smells, the sounds, and the lighting. This is all done to tell a story that evokes emotion. And those emotions of joy, awe, and wonder color how we see everything around us, including the person we’re with.
Intimate Moments in Unexpected Places
Now, you might be thinking, “How does anyone have an intimate moment in one of the most visited vacation resorts in the world?” You’d be surprised how easy it is.
First of all, who is really paying attention to you? Everyone there is primarily concerned with their own experience. So, unless you are calling attention to yourself, it is easy to go unnoticed in the crowds. And just as they tune you out, it is equally easy to tune out the crowds and focus on who you are with.
That said, there are plenty of opportunities to feel like you are alone, or to feel like you have the place to yourself: Riding together in a Doom Buggy through the dark of the Haunted Mansion, sharing a snack at a table outside the Patisserie in Epcot’s France Pavilion, People-watching from the Main Street train station, or leisurely exploring the paths of Discovery Island.
A day at Disney World is full of spontaneous, intimate moments.
You can also lean into the built-in stories of fairytale romance with a splurge on a dinner at a signature restaurant, private carriage ride, or a dessert party with private view of the fireworks. These romantic moments are even better when you are feeling relaxed, playful, and more in the moment.
The Real Magic of Disney World
Disney World is “The Most Magical Place on Earth,” but the real magic isn’t in castles or fireworks. The true magic of Disney World is how it makes us feel in the moment, and how those feelings become the memories that shape our stories together.
Those shared experiences, those moments of connection between two people, are what true romance is built on. And that’s what makes Walt Disney World Resort “The Most Romantic Place on Earth.”
