Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance at Disney’s Hollywood Studios is now open. Not only is it the most unique experience at Disney Parks, but it has a boarding process that is interesting, to say the least. If you’d like to increase your chances of getting a coveted boarding pass for this multi-faceted attraction, I have some tips that will help.
Install the My Disney Experience App
While it’s possible to visit Walt Disney World Resort and have a great time without the My Disney Experience app, you will need it get a boarding group for Rise of the Resistance.
Yes, it’s possible for a Disney Cast Member to put you and your party into a boarding group, but Cast Members can only help so many people at a time. So, the app is your best and first option. It’s also the best way to keep track of what boarding groups have been called and to get notified when it’s your turn to ride!
Connect Your Party on My Disney Experience
If you are making a boarding pass as a solo rider, skip this step. But, if you’d like to go with others in your party, make sure you’re connected to everyone on My Disney Experience before you get to the park. In fact, every person who will be trying for a Rise of the Resistance boarding pass needs to be connected to everyone as well.
There are two ways to connect your party. First, in the My Disney Experience App, go to your profile. Toggle over to Family and Friends list. There you can see everyone you are connected to. To add another person, scroll to the bottom of the list and hit add a guest. You can find people through connected friends or by name and age. The second way is through the Disney World website. Go to the My Disney Experience tab. Click on My Family and Friends. Scroll to the bottom of the list and hit add a guest.
During my visit, I was unable to make the boarding passes because I was not connected to a child that was traveling with us. Make sure that the people who are trying for a pass are connected to everyone including children.
When it comes time to join a boarding group, you’ll need to select all the people in your party individually. If you have a large list, this could take extra time. You might consider renaming everyone in your party with “AA” at the beginning of their names to move them to the top of your list.
Get to Disney’s Hollywood Studios Early
Plan to get to Disney’s Hollywood Studios an hour before opening. Take the first bus or call for an Uber/Lyft. The reason for this is so you leave enough time to clear security, scan your ticket and get situated before the park opens and the scramble to get boarding passes begins. During busy times lines can get long. I left my hotel a little before 7 via Uber and got into the park by almost 7:30 for an 8:00 opening.
Another thing getting there early does is allow you to position yourself to ride another popular attraction like Millenium Falcon: Smuggler’s Run or Slinky Dog Dash in Toy Story Land. Many people will have the same idea to go to these attractions right after getting their boarding passes. But by getting their early, you can essentially be on line for those while you get your boarding pass.

Close My Disney Experience Before Entering
My Disney Experience is a GPS-enabled app. It needs to know you’re in Hollywood Studios in order for you to try for pass. Whenever you open the app, it finds your location and shows you the information related to the park you are in.
Close the My Disney Experience app completely before entering the park. When you reopen the app after entering, the GPS will know you’re in Hollywood Studios and bring up the screen with the link to the Rise of the Resistance boarding group procedure.
Get Past the Turnstiles
Everyone in your party needs to have their tickets scanned and get past the turnstiles prior to park opening. You cannot have just one person go to the park while the others stay back at the hotel. Everyone wishing to ride needs to get to the park and scan their ticket.
Once you get into the park, there’s no need to run. Proximity to Galaxy’s Edge is not a factor in getting a boarding pass. We noticed crowds of people heading over that way as soon as they entered the park. It does not matter. All that matters is that you’re inside the park.
Turn Off WiFi
For those that have been to Walt Disney World before, you know that their complementary wi-fi is spotty at best. And with hundreds of people using their phones at the same time, service will become even slower and glitchy.
When we really want to make sure we have a connection inside the parks, we always turn off the Wi-Fi. We also find that our connection suffers in large crowds, and improves when less people are around. So finding a less crowded area of the park may help.
Have More Than Once Person Try
Your chances for joining a boarding group will increase if you have more than one person in your party try for a pass. We had 3 people, who were connected to everyone, try for our group. The more people, the better your chances.
Cross Your Fingers
The fun starts at park opening. When you hear the announcement, open the My Disney Experience app and click on the Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance boarding group access. Cross your fingers and hope for the best!

My party was in boarding group 69. We kept checking the app to find out the status of the groups. You could also set up notifications. The waiting was the hardest part. Fortunately, at around 2:40 our group was called!
Disclaimer

Unfortunately, you can do all of these steps and still not get a boarding pass. It’s all about luck. There seems to be no rhyme or reason as to which group you’ll be assigned to, if any. When we received group 69, the people near us got group 24.
Just because you get a Rise of the Resistance boarding pass, it doesn’t mean you’ll actually get to ride. On the day I went, it was written on the bottom of the pass that only groups 1-56 were guaranteed. All numbers above that would be called if time permitted. Fortunately for it all worked out. Also, the number of boarding groups called to ride varies each day.
Despite all the stress and waiting, Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance is definitely worth it. It is an experience like no other. It will leave you speechless, wondering what just happened.
