Impromptu “Once Upon a Time” Dessert Party

“Once Upon a Time” has become one of my just-turned 8 year old daughter’s favorite shows. When we were planning her birthday party this year, after dropping the bomb on me that she wanted to have her party outside of our home (gasp!), she requested that her family party be a “Once Upon a Time” Party.  This past weekend, we were all set to celebrate her 8th birthday with our whole family. Unfortunately, Mother Nature had other plans.
With the inclement weather (the curse of being a January baby), the majority of our extended family couldn’t make it. We made the best of it, though, and threw her a small “Once Upon a Time” themed dessert party for our little family.  This party was easy to put together last minute and can easily be used for an impromptu “Once Upon a Time” viewing party as well.

Food:

Originally, the party spread was going to be on a much larger scale incorporating finger foods and a small lunch. I scaled back on the amount and variety of foods and only focused on dessert. I ended up serving 3 different desserts.

Evil Queen’s Cupcakes: Chocolate cupcakes with vanilla frosting with a maraschino cherry and mint “apple”

Poison Apple Turnovers: Frozen puff pastry apple turnovers (easy!)

“Hot” chocolate pudding cups: chocolate pudding topped with whipped cream and cinnamon served in a tea cup

Decor:

The decor I used is a nod to Mr. Gold’s Antique store. I tried to gather things from around the house that had an ‘antiquey’ look. I used branches in a vase to symbolize the Enchanted Forest. The stack of books was to represent all the stories the characters come from. I set the clock to 8:15 (the time the clock was stuck on until Emma made it to Storybrook), a tip I got from my friend Guru Donna Kay’s amazing Once Upon a Time party board.

In the end, I managed to pull off a fun party that the little princess loved. Hopefully someday I’ll be able to throw the big party I had planned. Maybe I’ll do it when “Once Upon a Time” returns to ABC Sunday, March 1st at 8 p.m.

What a fun idea! We love that show in our house, too.
