New Year’s Eve is not just for grown ups. Kids can have a blast on the big night. More often than not, we are celebrating the New Year as a family at home (I actually prefer it). It doesn’t take much. A few festive appetizers, some fun decorations and you’ve got yourself a party. In 2014, we celebrated with a Poppin’ in the New Year party. The trick to having a great party at home is to make something simple look sophisticated.
Ring Pop Mocktails
One way to make New Year’s Eve extra special for kids is to whip up a festive drink. This Ring Pop Mocktail has only a few ingredients and is a snap to put together. The key is the decorations. With a combination of colorful toothpicks, fruit, colorfully rimmed glasses and ring pops, your kids will feel like they are celebrating in style.
Ingredients
- plain seltzer
- Ring Pops
- maraschino cherries or any type of fruit for garnish
- fancy plastic stemware
- party toothpicks
- honey and colored sugar for rimming the glass
- twisty straws
Directions
Pour a few tablespoons of honey into a small dish. In another dish, pour a few tablespoons of colored sugar. Dip the rim of the glass in the honey dish then immediately in the sugar. Swirl the glass around a bit to make sure the rim is covered. Stand upright and allow to dry for a minute or two.
Fill the glass about 2/3 of the way with seltzer. Drop in one Ring Pop into the glass. Let it steep for a while to let the Ring Pop dissolve into the seltzer. The seltzer should start turning into the color of the Ring Pop. It will also take on the same flavor.
Slide the cherries(fruit) onto one of the party toothpicks. Place it into the glass. Add a twisty straw and garnish the stem of the glass with another Ring Pop.
Ring in the New Year Party
These Ring Pop Mocktails are so easy, older kids will even be able to make these themselves. You could even create a whole “Ring in the New Year” themed party around these drinks. Pair them with onion rings, a ring of pigs in a blanket and some ring shaped doughnuts.
